How to solve the McAfee DAT 5958 update error for Windows XP? If you computer kept on rebooting for no reason after updating your McAfee Antivirus DAT, it is probably due to DAT update 5958 which deletes the svchost.exe file, which then triggers a false-positive in McAfee itself and sets off a chain of uncontrolled restarts and loss of networking functionality.

Here is the simple solution without formatting your computer.

Step 1 – Boot to safe mode via F8,
Step 2 – Rename mcshield.exe to mcshield_temp.exe
Step 3 – Reboot
Step 4 – Run McAfee Virus Console
Step 5 – Go to Tools –> Select Rollback DAT
Step 6 – Rename back to mcshield.exe
Step 7 – Reboot

That wasn’t too hard, was it?
